Acute Reversible Heart Failure in Severe Iron-Deficiency Anemia Associated with Hookworm Infestation
نویسنده
چکیده
SEVERE iron-deficieney anemia associated with hookworm infestation is common in Uganda and during the year 1957, accounted for 114 or 5 per cent of all adult medical admissions, excluding pediatries, into Mulago Hospital.' It is not intended in this communication to enter into the controversy over the role of the hookworm in the causation of the anemia,2-5 but it can be stated at the outset that experience at Mulago Hospital continues to confirm Lehmann 's findings6' that iron alone will not cure the aniemia and that, in addition, removal of the hookworms will result in a rapid improvement. Severe anemia from any cause may affect the heart by producing a hyperkinetic circulatory state with its manifestations of tachycardia, dyspnea, and edema.8 These are commonplace findings in severe anemia associated with hookworm infestation seen at Mulago. Furthermore, congestive failure due to the anemia is not uncommonly seen and this report is concerned with a study of heart failure in patients with severe anemia associated with heavy hookworm infestation.

Real-time PCR Demonstrates Ancylostoma duodenale Is a Key Factor in the Etiology of Severe Anemia and Iron Deficiency in Malawian Pre-school Children
BACKGROUND Hookworm infections are an important cause of (severe) anemia and iron deficiency in children in the tropics. Type of hookworm species (Ancylostoma duodenale or Necator americanus) and infection load are considered associated with disease burden, although these parameters are rarely assessed due to limitations of currently used diagnostic methods. Using multiplex real-time PCR, we ev...
متن کاملHookworms, malaria and vitamin A deficiency contribute to anemia and iron deficiency among pregnant women in the plains of Nepal.
Anemia and iron deficiency during pregnancy are prevalent in developing countries, but their causes are not always known. We assessed the prevalence and severity of anemia and iron deficiency and their association with helminths, malaria and vitamin A deficiency in a community-based sample of 336 pregnant women in the plains of Nepal. Hemoglobin, erythrocyte protoporphyrin (EP) and serum ferrit...
متن کاملHookworm anemia in the adult population of Jagapati village, Bali, Indonesia.
A cross sectional study was conducted in Jagapati Village, Bali to assess some characteristics of hookworm anemia among the adult population. Hookworm anemia was defined as an iron deficiency anemia in heavily infected individuals (EPG > 2,000). WHO criteria for anemia and criteria of Hercberg for iron deficiency were used. In this study, 15 cases of hookworm anemia were found among 454 total s...
